New York State Manufacturing NOW is featuring Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) in a video about the company’s capabilities. SSP is a customer of EHS Risk Management, a Division of Examinetics, and uses the EHS Risk Manager to recognize, evaluate, mitigate and manage its environmental health and safety (EHS) risks.
Founded in 1989, SSP employs approximately 85 people and makes silicone materials and products for industries ranging from defense and aerospace to healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Many of the company’s advanced materials meet U.S. military specifications, and its laboratory products include PTFE/Silicone rubber resealable septa closures.
Paul DiCaprio, SSP President from 2010 to 2023, understands the importance of safety. As company president, he asked EHS Risk Management to visit SSP’s upstate New York manufacturing facility and perform a detailed risk assessment. SSP was unsure how well its safety program managed risk, and the manufacturer was also concerned about compliance.
Steve Valentine, EHS Risk Management’s Vice President, performed a detailed risk assessment for SSP. A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Valentine has over 35 years of experience in developing and implementing safety management systems. His expert assessment analyzed SSP’s leading indicators and risks, both in terms of probability and severity.
The EHS expert then presented the results of his assessment to SSP’s leadership team. DiCaprio reviewed the report and shared his own thoughts with EHS Risk Management. “I would feel horrible if someone was injured just because I didn’t realize or know what needs to be done to provide a safe workplace,” DiCaprio said.

Valentine also recommended the root cause solution: the EHS Risk Manager. This continuous process combines today’s technology with access to safety professionals. It also costs less than hiring a full-time safety manager. EHS Risk Management designed and built SSP’s program, but the company’s own personnel are responsible for its continuous implementation.
Today, EHS Risk Management continues to help SSP assess its risks. Paul DiCaprio is now semi-retired, but his successor as company president, Adam Stiles, is also committed to investing in safety. As SSP learned more about the business value that this investment provides, the company asked EHS Risk Management to provide additional consulting services.
Barbara Rockwell, a Safety Professional with EHS Risk Management Division of Examinetics, is now supporting SSP as it builds and strengthens its safety culture. Management commitment, employee involvement, and the continuous recognition of risks are all critical to this effort. The EHS Risk Manager is an operational program along with a continuous improvement process that involves taking a proactive approach to safety.
EHS Risk Management salutes SSP for its recent video feature in New York State Manufacturing NOW and wishes the company continued success. If you’re a manufacturer, we invite you to contact us for an assessment. Whether you are concerned about compliance or unsure of your risks, EHS Risk Management is ready to help.
